Dr. Gregory K. Moss, Sr. is President of the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, Inc. The Convention is one of the nation’s premier state conventions in its passion for missions, its earnestness for fellowship, and its tradition for education. The Convention is made up of more than 1,600 churches and over one half million Missionary Baptists.
Since 1998, Dr. Moss has served as Pastor of Charlotte’s Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church. More than 2,300 persons have joined Christ in his pastoral tenure and almost half of them by baptism. While Saint Paul is one of the largest faith communities in the state, it is not a “mega” Church, but a growing faith community with mega ministry. The Church’s emphasis and the Pastor’s thrust are spiritual growth for every disciple through exercising their God-given talents
and gifts.
Pastor Moss’ passions are expressed in his ministry focus. One will observe that passion in the St. Paul Youth Ministry or in the Samson Ministry for men or in the Chosen Vessels Ministry for women or in the Discovery of Spiritual Gifts Ministry for all who fellowship in St. Paul. He is bold and innovative in ministry and has infused worship at St. Paul with drama, arts and music. He has developed a Christian education ministry that equips the whole community in empowerment that reaches the soul, expands the mind, renews the body and heals the spirit. Every spring, he journeys across the nation visiting a score of college campuses where the dozens of young people from St. Paul are enrolled. He has committed the Church to transforming and embracing its neighborhood such that the Church’s growing influence on the Charlotte community is broadly known and deeply admired.
His journey toward this moment began in Statesville, North Carolina in humble surroundings and modest resources. The only son of the late Catherine Moss, he embraced the Christian faith in his youth and affiliated with the First Baptist Church of Statesville. As a youth at First Baptist, he was exposed to the state convention that he would later lead as a camper at Youth Bible Camp. As a young adult, he was a camp counselor. His pastor and mentor, Dr. J. C. Harris, encouraged him to embrace his call to ministry when he was 21 years old. Having put his hand to the plow, he has never looked back.
He earned his first degree in 1976: an Associate of Arts degree from Mitchell Community College in Statesville. A Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte followed in 1978. He attended Shaw University Divinity School in Raleigh and earned a Master of Divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina in 1983. His terminal degree is the Doctor of Ministry degree which was conferred upon him in 1992 by McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois.
He has held pastorates in Concord, North Carolina (The First Baptist Church) and in Reidsville, North Carolina (Zion Baptist Church). In each of these assignments, he honed his skills as a community organizer and champion for social and economic justice. He has continued those involvements throughout his ministry. He currently chairs the Strategy Team for HELP (which stands for Helping Empower Local People), an arm of a national grassroots organization established for the purpose of organizing for social justice.
Mature in his youth and youthful in his maturity, Gregory Keith Moss, Sr. is a renaissance man in so many ways. He brings to every aspect of his ministry those qualities that embrace life and empower people. As friend of those who hurt, a pastoral caregiver to pastors, a guide and mentor for those who are seeking, and a tireless worker for justice and peace, he has won the admiration and respect of thousands. However, none admire and respect him more than his wife, Jacqueline Moss, and their four children.
